Why the sessions matter
Forex is traded wherever banks and brokers are open, so activity rises and falls as each centre starts and ends its working day. The Bank for International Settlements survey of April 2025 found that sales desks in the United Kingdom handled about 38% of global foreign exchange turnover and the United States about 19%, followed by Singapore (11.8%) and Hong Kong (7.0%). That is why the London and New York sessions get the most attention.
There is no official schedule for forex sessions: the foreign exchange market is traded over the counter between banks and brokers around the world. The session hours on this site follow the common market convention (each centre from its morning to its late afternoon). Exchange hours are quoted from the exchanges themselves.
